As the Christmas season steadily approaches, we have to spare a thought for those working in our respective postal services. With Christmas cards and care packs sent to those in other parts of the country or across the globe, as well as online shopping more popular than ever, the humble mail man has probably never felt the strain quite as much.
Those in my native UK hoping for their parcels to reach their destination before Christmas day have been warned to get them in the mail by the end of this week at the latest, and the US postal service alone is bracing for its busiest Christmas ever, with an anticipated rise of almost 20% more postal traffic than last year. Those working in sorting offices, loading and unloading trucks and, of course, the people delivering cards and gifts to our doors are most likely dreading the next few weeks.
Be thankful, though, that few of us rely on Chinese postal services this Christmas when hoping for our parcels to arrive both on time and in one piece; along with a video showing a postal worker tossing parcel after parcel from a truck onto a concrete floor before kicking a few out of his way, photographs showing enormous mountains of boxes and packages reveal the utter chaos that is at least one Chinese shipping company.
You’d be forgiven for thinking that this is a photo taken at the scene of an accident or shortly after an explosion, with boxes piled up to the ceiling, tumbling and falling out onto the street. As one Japanese internet commenter stated upon seeing this image “customer care doesn’t seem to much of a priority here; if it rains, those boxes out in front of the shop are screwed.”
Photos uploaded to the internet earlier this week show staff gathered around enormous piles of boxes and packets trying to sort them into piles. If we were given the task of sifting through that lot, we’re not quite sure where we’d start…

But it’s not just the sheer amount of mail here that’s worrying; the attitude of at least one member of staff leads us to believe that no amount of “fragile” and “keep upright” stickers adhered to our precious cargo is going to make an ounce of difference…

Cookies from grandma: boom! That new laptop you ordered online: smash! Those poor, poor parcels. “You’ve gotta feel sorry for the poor sap whose parcel is sitting at the very bottom; he’s in for a looong wait!” tweeted on Japanese net user. “LOL this kinda looks more like a refuse centre than a mail office…” quipped another.
The next time a parcel arrives at your door having made its way through China, give it a big hug. It’s probably been through a lot…
